Pfaff 30 1958

The Pfaff 30 has an excellent reputation for quality, reliability & long life. It's a straight stitch only machine, with reverse, but there are many attachments for it if you want more than that.

This is my first one & it is an impressive machine! It oozes the best quality German engineering & stitch quality is superb, many thinking it better than the venerable Singer 201s. I do agree now I've tried it.

I have the original Bill of Sale & Guarantee with this machine. Came with a 25year Guarantee!! Who else did that? (Not Singer!) They were very confident in its quality to offer that.

It cost £43 17s 6p in 1958, & adjusted for inflation that equals circa £1030 in 2020!

It has a Hillman 1/15HP replacement motor which is just as powerful as the original Pfaff I'm reliably told. It has a very light handwheel which, because of its low mass, accelerates & slows rapidly. Makes the Singer 201s seem a little sluggish in comparison.

The bobbin case area is very similar to the 201, but again this one is better because you gain access to the internals by simply loosening the wing nut seen lower right. It also has a knob on the bed by the bobbin winder guide to lower/raise the Feed Dogs...

It's in good mechanical & cosmetic condition, just let down by a scruffy base which will be refinished/recovered anon.

Very clean underneath & the cleated belt looks fine. Found no faults at all except for the motor drive belt, now replaced.

All in all a fine machine, with its newly covered case & base. The original Rexine was impossible to replace & so I tried Oilcloth. Pleased with the result, & I like the contrast with the black machine.

It's wipe clean, durable & a good, well constructed case. Solid beech base & plywood top.
