Wertheim Superba c1895

Found a real Wertheim Superba recently & it arrived yesterday, unscathed in the shipping: ) The MoP crazy paving border attracted my eye, but I didn't know it was a Wertheim at that point. (Thanks to Olaf & Unknown Artist on VSS for the ID: )


Came with a shuttle & a single bobbin but missing the RH slideplate. Mechanically it is as good as you will find. Turns over smoothly, has been well maintained, no rust anywhere & all the brightwork is shiny & clean! Bobbin winder is complete & smooth & works as it should.


It is badged as Robert Nelson & Co, the UK importers. Decals are 70% I would say, just some wear on the table as you would expect on a used machine 125+ years old. SN is S6530387 which I believe is mid 1890s.

Looks good from all angles & after a clean & polish it will gleam I'm sure: ) Very happy with it you could say. The woodwork is very nice, the cover also but it is missing its handle & no key for the lock... I can live with that & likely find replacements. Not sure of the needle size but I'm guessing 13x1. I'll bet it stitches when I get round to trying it.

The red poppies(?) are nice highlights against the gold decals & MoP. I look forward to cleaning it all: )


Underneath it is all clean & bright, no old oil stains/rust. Even the stitch length regulator mechanism is free & smooth. Just needs a little oil!

First test stitching today & looking good.

Leather is probably not the best for this, but here it is:

Starting top left with guessed tensions, missed a few stitches in the beginning but the last 3 lines are perfect: ) Did not adjust the tensions at all, just stitch length. No idea what caused the missed stitches, maybe it has not been used for 20 years, but it cleared itself. Probably surprised at actually stitching again: )

Starting bottom left here, the more it did the better it got. Nothing wrong with the tensions but I'll give the upper tension a good clean next. All it had before testing was a basic oiling! It deserves a proper service & a good clean & polish next: )

Singer 431G Slant-O-Matic throat plate pin problem

The 431Gs are considered by many to be the epitome of Singers 'Engineered' (as opposed to injection moulded plastic) machines. The last of the best? This one is immaculate & has undamaged throat plate pins.... Be aware of this if you ever consider buying one. Many users assumed that the throat plate pins are cross head screws & try to use a screwdriver to remove them. DON'T!! They are 'snap fasteners' & easily damaged. The 'Screws' get broken thus & you will see many 431s in this sad condition. The pins are not available new & like 'hens teeth' second hand. The other important consideration as a buyer is the chain stitch throat plate & correct bobbin case. Make sure these original parts come with it if you want the machine to chain. Singer 12K 1879 spares machine

Was looking for a couple of missing parts for my nice 1880 12K & I did find the parts on Ebay. Trouble was the chap wanted £45 + £5 shipping for it! I was missing the spoon bobbin thread guide + its little spring/guide. The item he was selling was the Bobbin Winder, but not even complete. So I left it there, but later came across a 1879 12K machine on a charity website, without a case & it looked scruffy & came with no guarantees! But it had my spoon-guide. I got it for £40 delivered: ) It arrived in 2 days & when I checked it over it had a broken hand crank, was a bit scruffy but had a shuttle & 3 bobbins & a very nice wooden base. Ebay pic above.  So I remove the spoon-guide & its little spring & fitted it to mine; )   Finished off my machine nicely : ) The point with the spoon guide is that you can use a 12K without the spoon guide, you just need a thread supply from above. My first Bernina & a bit of a mad one: ) Minimatic 807. From 1974.

Was watching this machine on my favourite VSM Charity site & ended up winning! Didn't really mean to win it, but no regrets: ) Looks good to me.     Looks to be in nice condition with a few extras: ) Ebay pics here. Only problem is no foot controller. But at £77 shipped I'm looking forward to delivery: ) There were two bidders competing with each other & I pipped them both at the post. Check the bidding. I like doing that; ) My 2 great neices watching were laughing too: ) I'm weaning them off TV. I'll update this when I get it. Got a chance on another similar item (a Bernina 707) tomorrow with a foot pedal... Watch for updates.  Wednesday 13th Sep. The other machine is finishing shortly. Same 2 bidders competing again; ) It's a 707 this time, but very similar. I'm hoping to ambush them at the end. Doing it twice would be quite sweet. It's on £26 with 5 hours left as I write.
