Necchi Supernova Ultra 1958-63

I found this bare machine & case on Ebay, without cams or foot controller, but it looked good to me for not much money.

In excellent order cosmetically & the only problem I found mechanically was the solid hand-wheel/clutch. Normal/not unexpected for these machines that don't have a lot of use, or stored unused for a period. Stitched OK on ZZ & straight stitch out of the box, & so I freed the hand-wheel with some difficulty. Trouble was I moved the timing in the process. Applying too much rotational force to free it! Lesson learned, but I'm sure it'll be fine when I investigate & fix the timing.

Looking inside it is clear that it has had minimal use. It runs at a surprisingly fast speed with its replacement foot controller & I also found a set of cams/accessories for it that appear to be correct. I will find out more when I sort the timing: )

The Supernova Ultra has some interesting spec for a 1958 machine. Like a drop down magnifier to see the built in needle threader details! (Needle threader is operated by the small white knob right of the glass) The rotating needle plate is an innovation, as is the 2 position foot control lever. For thicker materials under the foot?

The actual plastic 'glass' needs a polish here, but for me, with age related deficient eyesight, a needle threader is an essential these days.

It also has a push button needle release!

A couple of weeks later this machine has been on the back burner because I came across a very nice looking Necchi 535. (See my other post about it: )

Progress on this machine is proceeding slowly but surely. I know a real old timer, local!! VSM Tech. who is picking it up next week for a timing fix & a service. He started in 1967 & was telling me on the phone this morning about the 544 Lydias he remembers from then. He did a job (which I could not do) on my Bernina 807 Minimatic last year & I have every confidence in him: )

21st October 2024.

This machine is currently getting 'treatment' but I'm expecting it back soon & I can't wait to try it: ) The cam set/accessories for it is, I'm reliably told, the correct set for this machine. Easy to make a mistake on that one because there are many different versions & not all work with all  machines. Particularly the cams because there are two different cam drives on the period machines. This set came from USA, with  the associated extortionate shipping costs...

It is missing the Cam Holder Bushing but that shouldn't be difficult to find. That is for putting together your own camsets & there are 100s of possible combinations to choose from.

Showing the revolving 3 position needle plate & push button needle clamp: )

Now back in my hands, serviced, adjusted & PAT tested. I'm looking forward to learning about its abilities for embroidery & neat buttonholing over the winter.

Google is now preventing me from uploading pictures yet again, so please look on my website for better details here.

  1. I bought a Necchi Supernova in a cabinet, way back in Oct 2012. I have never sewn on it (shame on me). It currently has 2 hand cranks sitting on the cabinet. I really need to find a new home for mine.

    1. Yours is in a cabinet? We don't see many of them hereabouts! I'm very impressed with mine, lovely to sew with, quiet & super smooth. They do tend to solidify with lack of use though... Two of mine came with solid handwheel/clutch, but once they are freed they just get smoother: )
